Transfers Denied--Again |

The Va. Tech. Faculty appeals comm. declined to over-rule the Ath. Dept. which denied releases to 5 prep stars who want to transfer to Iowa. I guess they had to back up the AD., now matter how stupid his decision seems. I really can't understand how this will benefit the Hokies, since I really doubt any of these kids will stay there and wrestle this season. Can somebody explain why this happened, and more importantly, what are these young men likely to do now? Reply |

loki:
insightful post as usual. you beat me to it!
i don't know the history of schools and the art of denying transfers, but the obvious first thoughts of mine include the words----------cheesy, lame, desperate, pathetic, stupid, childish......
someone tell us both where we're wrong......

Loki- you think it will benefit them if they allow their top 5 guys to leave?
Basically, the thought is to keep the program afloat for another year before the new coach can recruit.
Some will leave but have to sit out a year. Either way, they can't compete for the Hawks next year.
I think, half will stay, especially those knowing that they have to compete for a spot in the lineup at Iowa next year. Might as well get some competition in. Reply |

i don't see these guys donning the hokie singlet again......
i think they are p.o.'d.....
i know i would be. they went there for 1 reason, and they should be able to leave for 1 reason......
i don't think loki thinks their leaving will benefit hokie rasslin', rather, he's saying their sitting out for sure won't.

Scholarships are issued annually. These guys just have to withdraw from Virginia Tech, and sit out a year and they can be hawkeyes in 07-08. Reply |

Technically, they should honor their letters of intent. But the school is weaseling out of their words to the boys (some at least). I thought I've read somewhere that the school knew about days like this when they signed on. Reply |

Wow, this one is getting real interesting....see today's story at Hawk Central.
Parents talking about court, saying the admins promised immediate releases when recruited. Talking about how the whole thing is vindictive toward Brands and wouldn't be denied if they wanted to go elsewhere.
The school has five days before the parents go to court. Reply |

My understanding is that "breach of promise" lawsuits are difficult to win--unless there is a pattern of promises made w/o any qualifications. I think maybe the parents are just putting some pressure on VTU, figuring they wouldn't want to go to court about something like this. Very odd.-------------------------- Thailand, I'd agree that if even 1 of these kids stayed in Blacksburg this season, the AD might think denying these transfers was worth it. However, that still seems short sighted. Word will get out that VTU is not a place that stands by its word. Like most things done out of spite or vindictivness, it will come back to bite the Hokies. I hope.--------------------- It's got to be better for these young men to be in IC, learning from Brands and Gable, competing in open tourneys, and working out in the Hawk wrestling room, rather that spending time in Blacksburg. Time will tell. Reply |

I do not know who is right and who is wrong.
Both sides should honor their word, whatever that word was.
But no matter who is right, it sure is fun to see a place like Va Tech in such disarray or trouble. It is fun to watch them squirm. I know I am a small person. I cannot help it.
I hope our people subpoena all the records of all the transfers out of VT for the past ten years, open up all kinds of issues and maybe even get a few of the transfers to testify and share their respective VT stories. Maybe even cause a deeper look into the athletic department at VT.
I know it will not come to that. Not even VT could be that stupid.
How much fun would that be? Reply |

This is a no-win situation for VPI. They should realize that, cut their losses, and avoid litigation. A public trial will only make them look foolish and poison the recruiting well for years. Reply |

Loki:
One can only wonder as to the make-up of that 'faculty committee'. I am simply astonished at the shortsightedness, not of Va Tech alone but of the NCAA rules as well, but of course that's another topic for another day.
To put this in perspective, Notre Dame's faculty senates voted overwhelmingly to join the Big Televen -- actually, the CIC in academic terms (b/c it includes U of Chicago, an original member) -- a few years ago, only to be overriden by the ath dept and football priests. That showed to me that at least at some level, Notre Dame can be taken seriously as an institution. I can't say the same for Va Tech. What a joke. Reply |
