How long do you think it will take brands to chase off this guy to make room for one of his VPI studs?   Reply

Illini, I read an article this weekend that said those recruits from Va. Tech. might not be able to transfer to Iowa and wrestle this fall. It sounds like maybe the AD there might not release them, meaning they would have to sit a year or go the JC route. I wonder if anybody knows more about this?   Reply

Loki, I had heard that same rumor but I don't know if there is any truth to it. Frankly, with all the transfers & JUCOs that Va Tech takes in on football, it would be pretty shocking to see them follow through with that sort of threat. Besides, it doesn't seem to be worth Kevin Dresser's time to deal with kids that don't want to be part of the program. Dresser's supposedly got one hell of a camp presence there in the high schools. Interestingly, he might have more cachet with east coast wrestlers than Brands did and might build a better program in the long run. Think Tom Ryan at Hofstra, for ex. That's why I was surprised to even hear Zalesky's name in the mix.

Excellent points, MBIB. I agree Dresser wouldn't want Iowa HS kids around when they'd rather be in IC. My question is, if these guys don't want to sit out a year or go to a JC, could they join the Hawkeye Wrestling Club and compete in open tournaments? I don't know the rules concerning that. Slightly off the topic, but do you think Bowlsby will attend the match if Stanford wrestles Oregon State this coming season?   Reply

Holy crap. On the one hand, I'm not surprised, but on the other...I'm flabbergasted.

"The ruling is subject to an appeal hearing conducted by a committee of Virginia Tech faculty and staff that reside outside the athletics department..."

Well, one has to think they will inject some sense into the whole affair. Transfer rules never made sense to me; coaches leave w/out penalty, players cannot? Oh, right, I forgot the sudden uptick in Iowa wrestling applications to Blacksburg is on account of the local color.

LOKI: I think they can still go to Iowa and wrestle unattached at the Midlands, LV Open and such. I think they can still transfer, just not gain eligibility for another year. But I may be wrong there.

Re: #3. I'm not sure anyone in Palo Alto would attend that match apart from Matt Gentry. :-)

lol, MBIB. I wonder what kind of att. they get at "Pac-10" duals? As for Va. Tech., I don't know what they stand to gain from denying these transfers. Is it just to deliver a message to future recruits? (Probably won't work) Or is it just to punish Iowa for "poaching" Brands? (Stupid, since they must have known when Tom went there that he'd be in the mix if Z. was let go at IA.)I agree, it just doesn't make sense. If it holds up, I sure hope these young guys come back to IC and go to some of those tournaments and get some experience, so they'll be ready in '07.   Reply
