I am not. I know people close to Tom and Jeni Brands, and people who write for USA wresting and other wrestling outlets. As you can see by the latest anouncement they are not far off.   Reply

I think having Dan Gable and Tom Brands in the same wrestling room would be awesome. Anyone who thinks having Gable in the wrestling room would be a detriment to the program doesn't no sh** about Gable or wrestling or both!   Reply

my dad is friends with both of the Brands' brothers, Gable was a heck of a coach no doubt about it   Reply

If Gable is "more involved" with the program, I think it should be as a mentor or motivator, not as a bench coach. A program needs to have 1 guy that makes the final decisions, and 1 guy who takes the heat. Brands is the head coach, so he's that guy. If Gable wants to work with the team, great, it will help. But a co-coach situation won't work. Anyone have any ideas who Tom will choose as his assistants?   Reply

Gable will NOT be on the bench.
NOR should he.
THE coaching-icon can better serve the U of I behind the scenes.   Reply

With Brands and Gable involved, Iowa wrestling will be fun to watch again. Intensity and aggressiveness will insisted upon. There will be a return to the attacking style of wrestling that made Iowa champs for so many years. Also, no other team will be in better shape to wrestle in the 3rd period of matches.   Reply

Loki:
He had better find a replacement for Hartung in a hurry. I credited much of Fulsaas' senior improvement to his hire, and one thing for certain is that we still need work in the upper weights to get Erekson and Fields to keep cranking along.

That's hogwash, I'm afraid.
And that's a good thing.

To clarify my last post. It seems quite clear that the "bull rush" days of Jesse Whitmer-esque fellas -- all strength, zero to little technique -- winning titles are just gone.

That's OK. I am willing to roll the dice with Brands + Schwab on the style issue, lord knows they have much to bring to the table, but "intensity and aggressiveness" aren't enough onto themselves. It will be interesting to see how they handle the advent of hip-riding, which is turning into the no-call-traveling of the NBA.   Reply

MBIB, you may be right about Hartung, but I believe in Fulsaas' senior year, Joe Williams, Alger, Zadick and Brands were the assistants. Didn't Hartung start the next season? I know he did a great job while he was at MN., but during his 2 years here it was hard to see a lot of improvement in the upper weights. Erekson made progress, but Bradley re-gressed. I think Brands may pick Wes Hand, but that's just speculation. I agree with you on the styles being different now. But having power, quickness, confidence and stamina are always going to be essential. They can adapt to what the ref's are calling if they can instil those qualities in the team.   Reply
