We need Gable to come back and put this program back where it belongs: winning national championships.

College wrestling has changed a lot since he left it. I'd like to see if he can still do it.
It'd sure be fun to watch.   Reply

DICK, I'm not sure Gable ever really left. Say what you want about Z., I think it would be awfully hard to coach with a legend like Dan hovering around the program all the time. I think Dan just loves being a part of wrestling--and there's no better spokesman for the sport--but it puts the Iowa coach in the absurd position of having to live up to the rep. of the guy constantly looking over your shoulder. I'm glad Hayden didn't do that with KF. I'm not being critical of Dan--it's just not the best situation for a new coach to flourish.Maybe Dan should become the permanent coach of the U.S. team.   Reply

Screw Gable, they need to bring back Beth Beglin to the field hockey program! Seriously, no final fours since, what, '99? WTF?

Tracy Griesbaum is going nowhere. Time to bring in a Tom Brands, a la Kristy Gleason? Or what about Kerry de Vries at Kent State?

This would never have happened if they had kept Christine Grant and axed Bowlsby.

Oh, my God, MBIB !! You got another batch of bad drugs,...didn't you? Yes, where is Christine Grant? Does anyone REALLY care? The best thing about her is her tailights disappearing into the sunset.   Reply

I understand the sentiment, Dick Burns, but this is a reality case. Gable is not the young guy that he was when he built the program. His body is battered to the point that he hobbles. He is a great spokesman for wrestling, but his coaching days are behind him. This is truly a sport for younger guys to coach. I would hope that his wife would say "Absolutely NOT" if he mentioned the idea to her.

John Robinson going back to Southern California to coach football was a disaster. That is what happens too many times when retired coaches try to go back to the place where they had success. Hawrestling Fan is right, times have changed since he was there 9-years ago. Hopefully, they will get one of his disciples,....maybe Terry Brands to fill the void.   Reply

The P-C article today suggested if Brands is hired, Gable will be "around" the wrestling room and program even more. Is that a good thing? I respect Dan tremendously, but he needs to let the new coach sink or swim on his own. Sorry to say this, but it sounds like Gable wants the best of both worlds-involvement with "his" Iowa program- but not the day-to-day chores that go with it. I truly feel the best situation is if Dan found a position with the national team. If Brands is the new coach, he can carry on the "gable-style" w/o Dan peering over his shoulder. Curious if anyone agrees.   Reply

Yes !!!

Jon Miller's site forum...Guy named USAFHawk who seems to have reasonable "inside info" expects TOM BRANDS to be named head coach as early as this afternoon (possibly) bringing Doug Schwab along as his #1 assistant....and that 3-4 Iowa kids who went to VaTech would come with him. Have to wait and see if he has it right.   Reply

Observer:

I'm just shocked that you would have that sentiment. As far as I can tell, 75% of the Iowa fans who come out of the woodwork to care so much about the wrestling head coach only do so so they can point to something, anything, Iowa is "awesome" at. Well, chit, why not derive the same sort of thrice-removed fandom from field hockey? Field hockey was pretty dominant for a while. (And, I might add, 2-1 matches are infinitely more entertaining than 2-1 wrestling matches.)

That's my only point. I'm not saying you fit the mold, I'm just saying there are only about three, count 'em three, posters who have one lick of anything to talk about in terms of actual wrestling. Everything else in the abstract.

Tom Brands as an Iowa savior? Hell, why not Greg Randall or Tom Ryan? Haven't both of them built better programs? Tom Ryan's only sin at Iowa was not getting better calls against Pat Smith.
