Eustice is seeded second and
Tsirtsis is 7th. Somewhat surprising. Bradley, Erekson, & Luedke have
tough brackets right from the get go, I think. Perry looks set, dunno bout Johnson, also rooting hard for Tom Clum of W. Anyhoo, following live time on intermat on one computer whilst t'other is on ESPN gamecast for hoops is a *most* entertaining way to start the weekend.

Will know a lot about the future of this team after day one tonight...   Reply

I agree, stlou, not a great day, but not as bad as ILL! It would be fantastic if Tsirtsis could beat the defending champ Ware!! Luedke will be tough--I'd love to see him be an All-American. Perry, Johnston and Eustice just have to attack, and stay out of bad positions. Ok. State will wrap it up tonight.   Reply

Great job by Johnston, beating Paulson after 5 straight losses! If he can avenge his loss from last month, and beat Cherrington of Boise St, he'll be back in the finals. Esposito, like Perry has 3 falls, but if Eustice stays smart, he can beat him. Mark just has to keep out of funky ties, and make Herbert work all 7 minutes. Tsirtsis got behind early vs.Ware, but he'll be back in consolations. Good job also by Bradley and Luedke keeping the Hawks in the hunt for 2nd. Keep it rollin', guys! Go Hawks!!   Reply

Loki:

I watched with utter amazement the horror show that was the Zalesky bash fest after the Big 10s. Having watched the tourney in person, my overwhelming feeling was, "Iowa may be down, but no one else is stepping up to keep them down." I'm talking specifically to Illinois and Michigan here, not Minnesota (obviously). I am not at all surprised to see Illinois collapse on day one. The biggest thing about the televen tourney were the stall rides, something typically called much toughter at Nationals. That and some dumb Hawkeye moves and the usual Bradley enigma, but I still liked what I saw from everything I had read about the passiveness exhibited in duals this year. (I only saw Wisconsin's duals in person.) Tsirtsis would've beaten Simmons IMHO but for taking down with the patented Simmons stall out ride. Still a good candidate for 3rd I hope.

So, to say I'm quite pleased as to how things have played out so far is an understatement. I think I was more excited to listen to Tsirtsis' near pin of Ware than Iowa's hoops disaster -- biggest debacle in the last decade or so for the Big 10? (Another topic for another board.)

Looks a lot like Iowa will end up 4th. For everyone convinced Zalesky should go, this will be more fuel for that fire. However, I'm with MBIB--this was about as good as Iowa could expect with the strengths of Okie St. and MN. If Tsirtsis had beaten Ware, I believe the Hawks might have gotten past OK. for 3rd. At any rate, IL. seems to be in a pattern of wrestling good duals and maybe 1 good tourney, but doing worse at Nationals. I'm with you, stlou, I'd be really happy for Ty to win a title. Next year, the Hawks will have 3 All-Americans returning (3rd/7th/8th), all of whom will probably start ranked 5th or higher. Add in either Fuller/Fields at HWT., Erekeson who has A-A potential, plus some good young talent, and Iowa can contend with MN./MI. or the young Penn. St. team. I'd like to see Z. get another year, but what Bowlsby will do I won't try to guess. I think this will be the last of the Cowboy's run, and the Gophers have to be favorites next season.   Reply
