TOPIC: Gable's comments
By hometownhawk

This morning, I heard part of some comments, gable made on the state of wrestling at Iowa. He basically said, if Iowa tanks at nationals, then a hard look at the program is needed to see what changes can be made for improvment.

sounds like that Z is out, if Iowa tanks.   Reply

Come on back Dan! Retirement is for old people in Florida.   Reply

What is considered tanking though? To me, anything less than 4th should be considered tanking for the Iowa program.   Reply

Where did you hear Gable's comments from? I would like a recap on that because what Gable says usually sticks. I wish we could get him to be more vocal on the matter--kind of hurry along this process and get us back on top where we belong.   Reply

ATX, I agree, however, this season, 4th is probably the best we can hope for at the NCAAs. The worst a Gable-coached team ever finished was 6th. If Iowa ends up 6th this year, but has 2 champs returning (Tsirtis and Perry)--does that change the equation at all? Another question--will MN. or Okie St. win the title?   Reply

OSU's winning streak is over. MN will win. Both teams have a lot of talent but when its tournament time it all comes down to who has the best talent and conditioning. OSU is never in shape for the entire match. That's why they stall so much. MN can go and go and go. Any thoughts on where Reiter will be in the mix of things? I cannot wait to see Mocco get stuck by Konrad in the finals in front of his home town.   Reply

I like your thinking, gohawks. However, MN. is relying on frosh/soph's, and OSU has the more experienced team. The Gophers are certainly hot right now. Reiter is tough, but I'm guessing he'll have to wait till next year to win a title.I agree with you on conditioning. Maybe the saddest thing about the current slide in Hawk wrestling is how teams like MN./IL./Mich. wrestle the "Iowa" style better than we do! That has to change. All that being said, if the Hawks can't win a title, I'd rather have it be MN. than the Cowpats.   Reply

I'll swim against the tide here a little bit. My feeling is that Okie State USED to be lacking in conditioning, but that John Smith has changed that...and they tend to score a lot of points at the end of the periods...and end of the match now. Would be interested in other opinions....I could be wrong.

Either way, Iowa certainly does NOT score late as they used to, except for Joe Johnston....and he has tended to start so slowly that he has miles to go to catch up at the end of the match.   Reply

LP, I'll agree Okie St. is a tougher team generally than in the past, and they rarely get worn down any more. I think the Gophers have been even stronger in that respect this season. A 3-day grind is another thing--experience may help Smith's boys. Here's an easy one for all of you--which Hawkeye won his 1st title by coming from way behind to beat his opponent 16-15 with a TD at the final whistle? (Hint-not a HWT!)   Reply

Linclon's too busy building motels. Minny wins Iowa bottom half of the top 10 time for a change   Reply

You are correct, LP. Want to guess who the OW was at that tournament (1993)? Hint-it wasn't Lincoln.   Reply

Strictly guessing now,...the years blend together too much:

1. Mark Ironside...probably too early for him.

2. Tim Hartung, Minnesota.??

3. Hulk Hogan.

I give up....   Reply

Terry Steiner beat Troy Sunderland(PSU) in the final and got the OW. IMO, the Hawkeyes own OW might have been Troy Steiner. Lincoln was put in the line-up during the season at 134, but couldn't make weight there. Troy cut down from 142 to 134, so Mc. could have his spot. That was the year TJ Jaworsky and Cary Kolat went 1-2 in the finals at '34 and Troy got third. Talk about making a sacrifice for the team! Those were some great years.   Reply
